David Cameron – The Man Who Would Be King

Poor David Cameron. Saying he would be prepared to form a “big, open and comprehensive” coalition with the Liberal Democrats. I’m sure the entire speech stuck in his throat.

But isn’t this great? It means that the UK will get a PM who can’t go mad and do what he likes, like, ohhh, say, invade a country under false pretences. Or give $700 bn to a bunch of bankers who really don’t need it.

The most common argument against coalitions is you don’t get strong governments. What this actually translates to is you don’t get someone who can just do whatever he likes. That is, a dictator or autocrat. Someone who runs the county based on their whim or deluded ideas.

Things like if you tax the people more, you will be able to give them more services. Beyond a certain taxation rate, about 30 per cent, it never works.

The main thing coalitions stop is the “I am the greatest” syndrome. You know what I mean. Someone thinks they are the most awesome person to ever walk the earth, but everyone else thinks they’re a jerk. A bit like certain recent US presidents. And I don’t mean just him. There is more than one. Just cast your mind back.

So if Cameron has to work with Clegg he won’t like it (actually, neither of them will) but it will “keep the bastards honest”. All of them.
